2023 RALPH RAPSON TRAVELING FELLOWSHIPRECONNECTING TO NATURAL MATERIALS

RESILIENT RONDO

CELEBRATING IDENTITY &amp; HISTORY
BIOGENIC MATERIALS
LEARNING FROM THE ENVIRONMENT

FUTURE OF CONSTRUCTION

In 20 years we will be past the AIA 2030 Commitmitement, and Net-Zero Carbon will be the baseline for any construction. Biogenic materials (organic material produced by physicologic activities of organisms) are both carbon sequestering and are the often forgotten materials of historically indigenous construction and are important to meeting that goal.

This project uses local wood and straw to create prefabricated structural units that have no thermal bridge and are a base for other biogenic finishes (earth, clay, and mycelium /fungus) and the recycled materials of the existing building. The brick is reused both for sustainability but also as a nod to the historical impact of Maxfield Elementary.

FUTURE OF LEARNING

This project proposes that the future of learning will be more communal and open than current education. Community programming including the Center for Cluture, Families, and Learning (CCFL) and University of St Thomas (UST) as well as Community Gardens and Greenhouse will encourage community involvement in education spaces, as well as a shared ownership of the site.

FUTURE OF THE SITE
The project includes a central lowered courtyard that will create a microclimate for flora and fauna that are indigenous to Minnesota where students can play and learn to recognize and interact with native species. The use local plant based materials and local plantingsv on the site is an opportunity to focus education away from historically western ideals, as well as introducing kids to a michrocasm of the natural environment at a young age.

2022 ST PAUL PRIZE COMPETITIONEQUASPACE AT GRACE

“Imagine a beautiful space where… Leaders driving community change can work, share resources and knowledge, and amplify their impact with their peers. [Where] Community organizations have access to a community collaborator, enhanced building amenities, technical assistance and much more — all at a manageable cost.” - Equaspace.com

Equaspace at Grace is a coworking space for non-profits. Located in the Grace building at the corner of the 7th Place Plaza and Wabasha St N, the building is a blank slate for redevelopment with ideal space on the upper levels for office program and the street level is ideal for connection to the plaza, which has restaurant spaces and theaters along it already. It needs some refurbishment and some light programming.

The building’s main floor engages the public way and becomes an extension of the plaza. Garage doors open the café space to the plaza and refocus the “front” of the building from Wabasha to Seventh Place. The other first floor functions include a reception/lobby space, a daycare, and some retail space, with loading off the alley.

The plaza redesign is light, with some added seating, native plantings and a centrally located splashpad to engage families with kids and provide some white noise for other plaza goers.

On the second and third floors are coworking spaces, featuring private offices, shared offices, conference rooms, open workspace, lounges, kitchenettes, and coffee bars.

The fourth floor has a rooftop event space and art gallery, with interior and exterior seating, and is shaded by an array of solar panels, which are also&nbsp;featured in the south wall.

CHALLENGING PERSPECTIVES

NOTHING REALLY MATTERS

EVERYTHING MATTERS

This building is not a building, but an idea.

If political echo chambers in social media, reality tv, and political pundit media created a “post-truth era” then the only way to combat this is with communal social interaction. The widening gap between political parties allows for the politicization of things that should be universally shared ideas – that we are all human, that we all deserve freedom, we all deserve healthcare, we all deserve shelter, and we all deserve dignity and respect from our fellow human.

Theater is a mode of entertainment that can also shine a light on disparities and hypocrisy with our social systems. This building will provide a space for theatrical performance, community events, public art, social gatherings, and more, and it should be led and curated by the community. The space and design of the space itself is somewhat inconsequential, what is more important is that it allows for the sharing of stories that showcase themes that highlight our similarities as people, as well as the differences in culture and experience that make us all unique.

Competition
2021 RALPH RAPSON TRAVELING FELLOWSHIPWILLMAR BUILDING COMMUNITY
COMMUNITY BUILT, BUILDS OWNERSHIP
SPACE FOR SHARING CULTURE
RESILIENT, LOW TECH CONSTRUCTION

The project is located in downtown Willmar. Downtown has several vacant lots, and the site is adjacent to the highway that skirts past downtown. There is a large trainyard just north of the highway, so the facade facing the highway is mostly blank. The building opens up to the east, west, and south, drawing people into the downtown. The program of the building is a Community Whole Health Center, which includes classrooms, a nursery, an auditorium, a fitness room, a community kitchen, and an office space. While the program dedicated the floorplan, the space is relatively open, and can be converted to new uses.

The construction of this building is mainly wood masonry. This involves laying cut logs perpendicular to the wall, and filling the spaces with mortar. It is a relatively low tech method of construction, with unique aesthetic and high insulation values. Because it is low tech, the community could be involved in the construction process, creating a sense of community ownership of the building. Because Willmar is such a diverse community, having a shared goal and sense of accomplishment is important to this project.

There is room in this project for different aspects of culture to be shared by teaching skills, cooking, language, history, music and more. While not all parts of community or individual health can be addressed in one building, this project attempts to create a space for some of the more tangible parts of community and individual wellbeing to be shared and addressed.

Net Zero Site Goals
Celebrating Identity
Canvas for Story Telling

Bde Maka Ska and the chain of lakes are an important space for community connections. No matter the season, the lakes are a place for activity, gathering, respite, and inspiration.

The new gateway to Bde Maka Ska takes a resilient approach to creating community space. The simple forms are constructed with clt and clad in locally sourced cedar. The building forms are shaded from summer sun by a bright canopy, reminiscent of sails. The canopy will direct air currents into and across the volumes and provide space for a Solar array to power the building and adjacent site.

Large perforated metal signs sit in front of the wood volumes and announce the lake from a distance. The building forms pull apart at the entry to the site, allowing a long view out onto a dock over the lake. On the lake side of the building there is a patio for the new restaurant, and stairs and ramps create an amphitheater down to the waters edge.

The identity and story of the community must be created by the community. All of the residents of Minneapolis that enjoy this lake have a voice, and we must take an equitable approach to make sure those voices are heard here. An Interpretive center is located at the entry in an opening between wood volumes, with space for exhibits, didactics, murals, and other expressions to center this space in the community.

Confluence Park is a community connector.

The site is located at the southernmost bluff above the confluence of the Minnesota and Mississippi Rivers. Nearly a blank slate except for an existing parking ramp, the main goal for this project is to preserve views of the valley and to provide a physical and visual connection from the neighborhood to the valley.

Most of the program is pushed to the east and west side of the site, clearing the center for an open park, with a pavilion representing the confluence at the center.

40,000 SF of&nbsp;retail and 120,000 SF of&nbsp;housing (100 UNITS) line S Davern St and front the corner of Shepard Rd, at the site of a future transit stop, and using the existing parking ramp for their parking needs.

A 30,000 SF community event center rises out of the ground on the west end of the site, covered in a green roof on the north slope to minimize its impact on the residential development to the north. It also has a green roof, thermal mass, fritted glass, and greywater collection.

Bring access to nature to the Midtown Community.

Become a community hub and landmark that will spur community led growth and development.

The existing KMart building has been a blockade for the retail corridor on Nicollet and Lake, but opening it and keeping strategic portions of the building provides unique structure for outdoor community events, such as Farmer’s Markets, Movies in the Park, Concerts, Food Truck Festivals, Art and Craft Fairs, Bike Training Events, and more. Remnants of the existing CMU walls become canvases for murals painted by local artists, promoting community ownership and engagement.

Nestled around the existing structure, Midtown Conservatory provides greenhouse spaces for the four Minnesota Biomes: Prairie, Deciduous Forest, Coniferous Forest, and Tallgrass Aspen. This is a place of refuge and contemplation, as well as a learning environment for local schools. A “Touch and See” Learning Lab adjacent to the greenhouses is an ideal teaching space for children as well as being a base of operations for the greenhouses. A raised seating space near the entry is ideal for either a pop up cafe or serving space for a food truck.

The southern half of the site is a new Midtown Park, and it provides space for a reflecting pool, a lawn, seating, community gardens, and recreation. The eastern side of the park also has a raised berm to view the skyline of Minneapolis to the north, as seen below.

COMMUNINTY&nbsp; ARCHITECTURE IS CITY INFRASTRUCTURE.
GREEN CONNECTIONS ARE CRUCIAL COMMUNITY ASSETS.
FROGTOWN ART GROWS STRONG COMMUNITIES.

Sitting at a crucial point between the Frogtown neighborhood and the state capitol, this year’s site for the St Paul Prize will be the social link between the people and the state. In this proposal, program has expanded beyond the Community Resource Center to include a new home for WFNU FROGTOWN RADIO, RENTABLE RECORDING STUDIOS, a STREET SIDE CAFE, CORNER RETAIL/GALLERY SPACE,&nbsp; and 24 UNITS OF MEDIUM DENSITY HOUSING. With the impending closure of the Sears Department store to the south, the site is charged for development into a future collaboration zone, however it needs to be grown sustainably. We believe this can only happen if the people of tihs place, including stakeholders such as the Frogtown Neighborhood Association can own the vision.

2018 RALPH RAPSON TRAVELING FELLOWSHIPK-HOUSE
Stable housing leads to thriving communities. This is a sentiment we can all agree on, unfortunately stable housing is not a reality for everyone.

THE PEOPLE
In Minnesota, there are 889 homeless unaccompanied youth under the age of 24. Of these, 146 are minors under the age of 18. This population has grown since 2015, and research suggests the actual number is likely greater due to the difficulty in tracking this population.1

Additionally, 160,830 households in Minnesota are considered very low income, or below 30% of the Average Median Income. However, there are only 100,080 rental units available that are affordable to them, and 43.6% of those units are rented by higher earners. Over three-quarters of very low income households are rent burdened, paying more than 30% of their income on rent alone.2

These two populations, very low income households and homeless unaccompanied youth, are at high risk for experiencing chronic homelessness.

According to Minnesota’s Action Plan to Prevent and End Homelessness, two-thirds of all affordable housing is “naturally occurring,” meaning it is low rent because of disrepair, lack of amenities, or location. These units are attractive to developers looking to improve them, and once updated are no longer affordable to low income renters. Because of this, there is an urgent need to create new affordable housing in Minneapolis.1

<img width="1664" height="935" width_o="1664" height_o="935" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/bacdc58a3864c710fd58d20b480841dfe409f741093b29bdd11f835aaf74acf0/00.jpg" data-mid="77672880" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/bacdc58a3864c710fd58d20b480841dfe409f741093b29bdd11f835aaf74acf0/00.jpg" />
To align with Minneapolis’ city plan to connect Nicollet Avenue back to Lake Street, the site will be divided in half, with Nicollet Avenue cutting through the existing Kmart. The eastern half will serve as a shell for long-term housing units for homeless unaccompanied youth, an office for caseworkers dedicated to connecting them to community services, a community room/classroom, a cafeteria, and lounge, with adjacent outdoor sport courts.

The west half will serve as rental housing for very low income households, with amenities found in standard rental units in Minneapolis; a fitness center, bike storage, and community room, with retail spaces on the west side. The apartments will also have outdoor patio spaces, a dog run, a community garden, and a public park on the south side.

<img width="2053" height="1650" width_o="2053" height_o="1650" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/04b74ccf86292f686b4210ea4636f1debe78636705990f80ce639f0148e1124a/02.jpg" data-mid="77672886" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/04b74ccf86292f686b4210ea4636f1debe78636705990f80ce639f0148e1124a/02.jpg" />These amenities are critical, because providing stable housing only solves one part of the issue. Stable housing alongside services, amenities, and community provide a better long term outcome.
The buildings intentionally face each other to create a sense of transparency and openness with each other and the surrounding community. Rather than a roadblock, they are a gateway for the reinstated Nicollet Avenue and the future Nicollet streetcar, as well as a backdrop for the new public park. The housing structures provide shelter and amenities that will help foster community within the development, and connect residents to the existing community fabric.

The practical function of antiquated industry degrades, but material artifacts and form remain in huge mass, dividing and creating extensive borders in the city. Material artifacts may provide value and interest to residents, not functionally but as a relic or reminder of a powerful system that helped shape the city.

Erasure is often not possible or plausible due to the artifacts’ mass and importance as a landmark (both in a physical space and as a larger network cutting through the city). These industrial networks and spaces can take on qualities of the sublime; even when devoid of functional program.

There are hidden histories, industries, landscapes, and city scale connections that we as architects and designers can leverage as critical elements to an architectural experience. To create opportunities for discoveries of nohuman scale, space, and time, the architect must be specific and intentional at a scale humans can comprehend. It is through materiality and shifts of scale that a dialogue between person, site, geology, history, network, and city can be achieved.

Extractions or insertions of material and form/void reveal the transformations of complex urban and natural environments to the user. Interventions give users a proximity to spaces never intended for human habitation, allowing the participant to discover connections between themselves and another time, another history, another place.
